Dancehall classes on Tuesdays

Hi Dancehall lovers and students,

2017 is again a Dancehall year! Classes have started again, and we are sharing energy on the dancefloor as usual every TUE 6-7.30pm at Studio68 (Waterloo / Southwark tube stations).

Classes are £8, no need to book in advance, just pay at reception. It is a drop-in class, so no worries if you miss a week, you will be able to catch up as soon as you come back.

I am also very excited to say I have been awarded an Artist International Development Fund (Arts Council England / British Council), which is supporting me to go back to Jamaica later on this year! I will be continuing my research on Dancehall culture, do a Dancehall Theatre collaboration with Kimiko Miller and expand the future vision of 1000 Pieces Puzzle overseas.

Keeping Jamaica in my heart, and feeling those Dancehall groves in my bones, here we go for another year of sweating, smiling, giggling and dancehalling!

Back to Old School June jpeg

Back to Old School is on this week!!

Nothing better than to listen to those music tracks that trigger memories and so many positive emotions! From Chaka Demus to some Elephant Man hits, this TUE 23rd JUNE, class is all about OLD SCHOOL Dancehall moves!!

A few weeks ago, I had the priviledge to teach Dancehall Theatre workshops in Venezuela (project organised by the British Council).  I was working alongside Professor Orville Hall (Jamaica) who was teaching Dancehall workshops (from Old School to New School) and lectures.

It was such a powerful and emotional week in Caracas! The young people were incredibly hungry for knowledge, but I, also, was able to further and deepen my own research on Dancehall culture.

Orville reminded us all how sacred each move in Dancehall is, how the dance tells the story of the people, how the culture is embedded in the struggle and how all of us teachers have a huge responsibility when passing on that knowledge.

I can’t wait to see you all on Tuesday. I will deliver this Old School class to the best of my abilities, staying as true and authentic to the culture and the moves as I can, remembering Orville’s wise words with each step and story.

“Old School” Dancehall vybz

2014 is slowly coming to an end, some have their heads into the Christmas festivities and its preparations, others are taing time out to reflect on the last 12 months and setting goals for 2015 to come.

But we have still 4 Dancehall classes left before we are going into hibernation!!  Over the next two weeks, we will be focussing on “OLD SCHOOL” Dancehall moves.  Due to popular demand we look at moves such as bogle, willy bounce, wacky dip, back to basics and more.  Time to remember and celebrate the legacy old school dancers such as Bogle have left behind.
