Basketball obsessed TJ and Badda are going to make it someday. But the time is ticking and the other world will not wait. They have been unleashed from the dark and nothing can hold them. The voices are speaking now. And they will be heard.
An explosive production combining hip-hop, krumping and contemporary dance theatre with basketball freestyle! It will take you into a world that will make you question your own. A 1 hour and 15 minutes artistic earthquake which premiered in London in June 2011 at the Cochrane Theatre.
“You have to applaud director and choreographer Cindy Claes for being so daring in her approach to theatre. (…) Claes’ experimentation defines her as an ‘artist’ rather than just a choreographer”
ToomuchFlavour Online Magazine, 2011
“A masterclass in contemporary dance, Voices in the Alleyway shows the struggles of a young pair of basketball-lovers, as they attempt to free themselves from the shackles of oppressive upbringings.”
The London Word, 2011
Voices in the Alleyway – Promotional Trailer
“I’ve always been obsessed with alleyways and… “the big question”.
I am a dance backpacker. Traveling the world to experience Krump, Hip-Hop and Dancehall culture, I always took pictures of abandoned alleyways (I don’t know why…). Alleyways intrigue me and inspire me. I find them interesting, creepy, beautiful, arty, and very attractive for some reason.
I always knew I wanted to dance, but then there was… “the big question”: what do I actually want to do with my dancing? Why do I do what I do?… In other words, I always questioned what my purpose was. I have constantly been in search of a deeper meaning, trying to make sense of those “un-reasonable” choices I made. I tried to understand why my gut lead me to do crazy/unconventional things I couldn’t find a rational explanation for… Until I got the answer: my purpose is to create magic earthquakes through laughter and tears. My art, my gift, my dance, my passion is one of many tools I received to fulfil this higher path. And I believe all of us know… deep inside… why we are here for.
Reality starts with a dream. Let me tell you the truth: this show came by accident. But the artistic earthquake it created in the UK, in Los Angeles, in people’s hearts, in people souls… wasn’t! That was purpose, and it all started with a dream!
I hope this story will make people dream again, and make them dream big. In an era where many are in search for purpose, in a society where we often question what makes us so special and unique: this show puts the emphasis on why each individual has no other choice but to shine, and highlights why the universe needs us to be the greatest of ourselves…
TJ, Badda and Beyanda carry a burden. They deny their past and they deny their gifts. They are being forced to listen to their gut feelings and intuition. Embarking on a mysterious journey, they start listening to the voices in the alleyway….”
