Cindy has a strong interest in storytelling, character work, improv, comedy, and the narrative arc in dance.

Her background in physical theatre and improv comedy nourishes her choreographic approach.

Tools shared in this workshop will support choreographers to reflect on their creative process; and dancers to find more authenticity within their performance.

About Cindy Claes

Cindy Claes is an artist wearing many hats: Choreographer & Director, Dancer & Performer, Dance-storyteller & Playwright, Dance Entrepreneur.

Born and raised in Belgium, Cindy has been based in London since 2005. She is a dance backpacker, collecting invaluable human experiences alongside her artistic path (USA, Jamaica, Europe, Trinidad, Africa, Venezuela, etc.).

She nourished her expertise in dance storytelling with her training in NYC / London / Paris in: acting, improv comedy, screenwriting and writing for comedy, physical theatre. Her training includes intensives at The Pit in NYC, DV8 Professional Development Program, International School of Jacques Lecoq in Paris.

Cindy has been the recipient of several awards in London: ADAD Trailblazers, Artist International Development Fund, Bonnie Bird UK New Choreography Award, etc.

Cindy is also passionate about using Dancehall, Hiphop and Krumping in Theatre, telling meaningful and hard hitting stories through dance.

In 2014 she was commissioned by the most renown Dance Theatre venue in London, Sadler’s Wells, her show “Wild Card: Dancehall Takeover” was the first full Dancehall Theatre night in London (sold out).

Her aim is to tell electrifying stories through dance. She has presented work internationally (UK, Belgium, Hollywood, San Francisco, Jamaica, Venezuela, etc.). Her unstoppable fountain of energy is her signature. Her shows are artistic earthquakes touching people’s souls and hearts through laughter and tears.

Full-length productions include: “Voices in The Alleyway, “Is My Whining Winding You Up?”, “School Fi Wifey” and “Puzzle B” (which won the Prize Roger Van De Voorde in Brussels).

She is currently focussing on her two solos: “Time is ticking, phone is ringing” and “Things aren’t always black or white”.

In 2017, she was involved as a choreographer in many shows tackling police brutality in the USA, the UK and Belgium

Cindy Claes has set up renown international dance exchanges and training programs for emerging choreographers/dancers. From Krump Theatre projects in LA to large scale programs supported by european fundings (1000 Pieces Puzzle), global connectivity is at the core of her work.
